      <image:title>Our Story - Our Family Dogs</image:title>
<image:caption>The height of our Collie breeding years were from about 1994 - 2003. At the time we didn’t realize how much we would wish to preserve this line of dogs and most of them went to non-breeding homes. Between 2005 - 2013 we managed to arrange for two breedings that kept our line alive. We owe much to the two families who agreed to breed their Faraway Farm Collies and help us preserve our canine family! In 2013 a puppy from our final litter went to Jessica Hennings of Gracehaven Old Fashioned Farm Collies. We are so grateful that Jessica included one of our dogs in her breeding program which allowed our line to produce another generation. Although Jessica has recently retired from breeding, we have located two males descended from our line who will be siring puppies in the coming years. On this page you’ll see a collection of old photos showing our family Collies and a bit of the story about how we tried to keep the line going over the years. In future breeding decisions, we hope to encourage the same look and temperament that worked so well for us in these earlier generations. When compared to the modern Rough Collie, our ideal dog has a wider head, a “stop” or transition between forehead and nose, larger eyes, a moderate coat, and naturally tipped ears. One unique trait of our dogs that has disappeared in the modern collie is the white blaze on their faces. Although some breeders value Collies for their working instincts, we always tried to breed for companionship rather than farm work. Collies have a natural caretaking instinct. They are gentle, loyal, and attentive, making them ideal family dogs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bosco was a pure-bred AKC rough collie from the Parader Line. He lived on a farm near us in far Northern Vermont. Laura first bred him to an Aussie named Flip. We kept one puppy from that litter - Duchess who was our most amazing and beloved family dog. When she died in an accident at age 6, Laura went on a mission to find Bosco, buy him, and get another litter of puppies with him. The next litter produced Angus, who lived to be 16 and sired all of our future puppies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The OTSCA dogs can come in a wide range of looks depending on how much Collie is in the mix. These dogs harken back to an earlier type of collie, before the breed evolved into the “Lassie” type. Pictured here is Silver Dollar’s Honeycrisp, who’s parents are both 1/2 Collie, 1/2 English Shepherd. Although some of these dogs are being bred to work on farms, they do not have the same intense drive as a border collie and they make great family companions. You will find several active facebook groups for breeders and owners of these dogs which is a great place to find breeders and get to know the dogs that are being bred today.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Collies through history</image:title>
<image:caption>Collies and other herding breeds can all be traced back to similar origins in the British Isles. However, today’s modern rough collies all descend from a common ancestor “Trefoil” who was a tri-color collie from Galway, Ireland born in 1873. Queen Victoria popularized the collie in the 1880’s, and in the 1920’s Albert Payson Terhune (pictured here) further elevated the noble Collie in his novels depicting his dogs as the heroes. The Collies he raised at Sunnbank kennels had a lasting influence on today’s breeding lines. By the 1950’s, Rough Collies were the most popular breed in America, thanks to the long running TV series “Lassie.” Much has been written about the history of the breed, click below for more links and photos.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Our Story</image:title>
<image:caption>Laurie Ellis fell in love with collies as a young girl and raised her first litter of collie puppies in the 1960’s. When she started a family of her own in the 1980’s she searched for a Collie but was dismayed to find that modern rough collies no longer resembled the dogs of her youth. With extra long noses, narrow heads, small eyes, and impractically thick coats, the modern collie had evolved to suit Kennel Club breed standards. In an experiment, Laurie bred our family’s Australian shepherd to an AKC rough collie in 1986 and the resulting litter of puppies was exactly what she was hoping for. Over the next fifteen years our dog family grew along with our human family, producing many beautiful and beloved old fashioned farm collies. Most of them were 3/4 rough collie and 1/4 Aussie with loving, loyal personalities - the ideal family companions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We share our vision with a number of like-minded breeders who wish to bring back a more old-fashioned type of collie. Most of these dogs are a result of crossing the rough collie with English shepherds or Australian shepherds. The preferred amount of outcross varies among breeders, resulting in a wide variety of looks and temperaments in the dogs.
